This weekend marks a decade in NYC. After finding out I was admitted into the graduate music program at NYU in spring 2004, I made immediate plans to move to the big apple from NC even though I wouldn’t be starting my program til fall 2005. Labor Day weekend 2004 my lil sis @ms_kake & mom @daveswife helped me pack up my 1bedroom apt into a small uhaul & my 1993 ford probe & we drove the 8hrs to the city. I had no job, I had no apt but I stepped out on faith & took a chance.
The only people I knew were record label radio promos guys from my 102jamz days who my mentor @tapmoney threatened to look out for me or he wouldn’t play their records lol. Forever grateful to @deepitboss & @digiceo for showing me the #nyc way early.
This crazy city has taught me sooo much. Made me even more tough then growing up in the ROC can make any girl. Through the ups & downs, trials & triumphs, friends & vultures I wouldn’t give up any of it for the world. Concrete jungle indeed & I will forever be grateful for all the life lessons this city has taught me about myself. So #tbt to some pics of my first 3yrs in this crazy city when I had some hair on my head lol & I’m mad the only pic I found of myself in NYC in 2004 was w/ Nelly at Iceman’s fashion show during fashion week. Heeeeyyy @stylebytara in 2005. With braids in my cube at my first permanent gig where I had benefits & a corp card lol at ESPN in 2005 or 2006 & my first NYC bday party in blue at the 40/40 club in May 2006.
This city has been good to me but it might be time to conquer a new city #staytuned.
